Every crocheter starts somewhere. Whether you're picking up a hook for the first time or coming back after a long break, mastering these ten stitches will give you the confidence to tackle almost any pattern.

1. Chain Stitch (ch)

The foundation of everything. Chain stitch is the starting point for most projects — it's the row of V-shaped loops that everything else builds on. Practice making even, consistent chains before moving on.

2. Single Crochet (sc)

The shortest and tightest of the basic stitches. Single crochet creates a dense, sturdy fabric that's perfect for amigurumi, dishcloths, and bag linings. Insert hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops.

3. Half Double Crochet (hdc)

The happy medium between single and double crochet. Hdc works up quickly and has a lovely textured look. It's a favourite for hats, scarves, and blankets where you want drape without big gaps.

Practice each stitch until your tension is consistent before moving to the next. Muscle memory comes faster than you think.

The remaining stitches — double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr), slip stitch (sl st), double crochet increase (dc inc), double crochet decrease (dc dec), front post double crochet (fpdc), and the classic granny cluster — each add new dimensions to your repertoire.
